11th Conference Environmental Protection and Energy - 8th of December 2023
EPAE 2023

The Environmental Protection and Energy Conference last year saw a vibrant participation of 350 registered attendees hailing from 37 different nationalities. The event featured a robust program with 93 presentations, organized into three simultaneous sessions spread across five rooms. These presentations were delivered in both English and Polish, catering to a diverse audience. Several sessions were inaugurated by distinguished invited guests.

A highlight of the conference was the debate titled "Everything is in our hands!" This engaging session brought together panellists who delved into critical discussions on various energy and environmental issues. Topics included soil protection, air and water resource management, sustainable waste utilization, renewable energy sources (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydro), advancements in energy systems, and energy efficiency measures. The debate was followed by an interactive Q&A segment with the audience, allowing for deeper exploration of these crucial subjects.

Held on December 8 last year, the conference embraced a hybrid format, allowing participation both in person and remotely. While this new format presented significant technical challenges, it greatly facilitated attendance for individuals from distant locations both internationally and within our country, eliminating additional travel costs. Moreover, this approach proved to be environmentally friendly, significantly reducing the conference's environmental footprint and CO2 emissions.

The conference is designed specifically for young academics and graduate students, offering them a platform to present their research, stay informed on current topics in the energy and environmental sectors, hone their presentation skills, and broaden their professional network.

A unique aspect of this conference is that it is entirely organized by students from the Power Engineering and Environmental Engineering departments at the Silesian University of Technology. As part of their Project Management course, led by Dr. Magdalena Bogacka and Prof. Krzysztof Pikoń, the students employ a "learning by doing" approach, utilizing Challenge-Driven Education and Project-Based Learning methodologies.

The students organizing this event adhered to project-based work standards. They were divided into smaller teams, each assigned specific tasks. The project was overseen by Agnieszka Bezuszko, who managed it using the Waterfall methodology with Agile elements, concepts the students had previously studied in the theoretical portion of their Project Management course. Remarkably, all preparations were completed in just two months, showcasing their efficiency and dedication.
